Training Programs and Institutions: Short Courses
 

The following training programs and institutions provide short courses on a wide variety of topics related to microfinance.

  1. Bankakademie International provides technical assistance and training to banks and microfinance institutions world-wide. Annually, its Micro Banking Competence Center (MBCC) offers a Summer Academy in Micro Banking for mid-level and senior managers of microfinance institutions that combines both technical and soft skill training.
     
  2. Bankers Institute for Rural Development (BIRD) provides training, research and consultancy services in the field of agriculture and rural development banking in India.
     
  3. Boulder Institute of Microfinance offers a range of programs in three sessions for 2007: Santiago de Chile Session - Boulder MFT en español (Professional development for microfinance specialists) ; Brighton Sussex Session - Integrating Microfinance (Microfinance training for specialists in health, education, agriculture and other areas of international development); and Turin Session - Boulder MFT, Boulder MFT en français (Professional development for microfinance specialists).
     
  4. CAPAF is a regional project based in Dakar , Senegal , promoting training, MIS and audit services, and information dissemination in the francophone African market. CAPAF works with 14 partners in Benin , Burkina Faso , Cameroon , Cote d’Ivoire , Guinea , Haiti , Madagascar , Mali , Morocco , Niger , Senegal and Togo .
     
  5. CGAP Skills for Microfinance Managers Training Program includes seven courses in the areas of Financial and Operational Management for MFIs. Each course lasts three to five days and is designed for Executive Directors, Finance Managers, Credit Managers, Operations Managers, Branch Managers and Board Members from microfinance NGOs, credit unions, banks, and other financial institutions. CGAP has entered into partnerships with local training providers in to bring Skills for Microfinance Managers to MFIs around the world regions.
     
  6. CGAP DIRECT Donor Training Course Building Financial Systems for the Poor: How Donors Can Make a Difference: This course is specifically designed for development professionals, policymakers, and investors who would benefit from a deeper understanding of microfinance to assist their work in international development agencies; socially responsible investment companies that focus on developing countries; government agencies, diplomatic missions, and central banks.
     
  7. COADY International Institute St. Francis Xavier University offers a certificate in Community-based Microfinance at its facilities in Antigonish, Nova Scotia,  focusing on innovative community-based microfinance initiatives that have significant potential for broad outreach and  improved leadership capacity and self-reliance with an emphasis on equity and asset-building as well as credit. It also explores governance, social intermediation, self-reliance, leadership and the combination of financial services with social programs such as health or education.
     
  8. Colorado State Unicersity - Advanced Courses in Community-Based Development offers courses in Community-Based Micro Finance, Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation, Project Management for Development Projects, Technology in Community-Based Development, Financial Management of Nonprofit Organizations, Cases in International Development, and Independent Study/Internships.
     
  9. EDA Rural Systems is a rural development consultancy organization in India , providing focused training combined with follow-up services. Along with the CGAP courses, it also offers modified training modules to suit its Asian market and clients.
     
  10. Giordano dell'Amore Foundation offers short term courses on Banking and Finance (as well as full time graduate and post-graduate degree programs).
     
  11. Harvard Business School-Accion’s Strategic Leadership for Microfinance is an annual 5-day course on Strategic Leadership for Microfinance at Harvard Business School .
     
  12. Harvard University - Kennedy School of Government offers its annual, two-week program on Financial Institutions for Private Enterprise Development (FIPED) for professionals working in the areas of micro enterprise finance and commercial banking for small- and medium-sized businesses. This program is designed to aid participants in the sustainable provision of financial services for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). FIPED presents participants with an opportunity to learn from the successful experiences of other countries. The course shows how to design appropriate financial instruments and to adopt market-oriented management approaches to serve the needs of MSMEs.
     
  13. ILO International Training Centre offers a wide range of courses on microfinance, including The Boulder Microfinance Training Programme.
     
  14. Institute of Banking Studies implements the Sustainable Microfinance Training Program (SMTP) in Jordan offering a Basic Introductory Course directed to credit officers working in various finance institutions including Jordanian banks and an Advanced Course targeted at microfinance managers.
     
  15. Intellecap Training aims to build institutional capacity and expand market understanding across a wide array of industry players, including MFI senior and middle management, investors, bankers, entrepreneurs, and consultants. Intellecap trainings vary from addressing strategic industry-wide issues to courses customised to a particular client’s needs.
     
  16. Microbanker Financial Training provides training for microfinance institutions in their countries of operations. The following courses are offered: Foundations of Microfinance (1 day); Cash-Flow Based Credit Analysis (2 days); Rural Lending (1 day); Credit Risk Management (1 day); Introduction to Financial Statement and Ratio Analysis (3 days); Small Project Finance (3 days).
     
  17. Microfin Training Courses provides training courses on Microfin (an operational planning model for microfinance institutions) and Business Planning.
     
  18. Microfinance Centre (MFC) is a foundation based in Warsaw , Poland , representing a network of 45 microfinance institutions in Eastern and Central Europe . Its range of activities includes training and technical assistance, impact assessments, workshops, seminars, exchange visits, and dissemination of information. The Centre also supports policy and advocacy work.
     
  19. MicroSave's Young Executive Development Programme (YEP) is designed to develop a professional cadre of young consultants capable of using the MicroSave methods and toolkits, not only to work in the microfinance industry but also in the mainstream, commercial financial service industry. Each year 6-7 young executives are selected to spend approximately 18 months working with MicroSave and its Action Research Partners to become certified in at least five toolkits relevant to the Product Development or Strategic Marketing stream.
     
  20. Punla sa Tao Foundation is a non-profit foundation in the Philippines providing a wide variety of microfinance training courses, including:  CGAP’s Skills training for microfinance managers; ILO-UNHCR Training in Conflict-affected communities; De La Salle University - Punla Management Development Program for Microfinance Managers (MDPMM); and AIM-Citibank MFI Training Program.
     
  21. Sanabel is a membership-driven regional network for microfinance institutions in the Arab world. Training course offerings include the CGAP Skills for Microfinance Managers Program, the International Training Center of the ILO “Making Microfinance Work” Training Program, and other courses developed in partnership with various organizations such as the Microfinance Center (MFC).
     
  22. School of Applied Microfinance (SAM) offers a two week programme in East Africa which provides MFIs with practical skills using CGAP and MicroSave Toolkits as the core curriculum. The programme is mainly targeted at middle and senior-level managers drawn from MFIs, banks, consulting companies and NGOs.
     
  23. Southern New Hampshire University - Microenterprise Development Institute holds an annual Microenterprise Development Institute training program for microfinance professionals. Courses focus on practitioner skill building in both financial systems and business development services and are designed for Microenterprise Managers, Executive Directors, Program Directors, NGO managers and CEOs, Financial Managers, Operations Managers, Board Members from Micro Finance NGOs, Credit Unions, Banks, and other Micro Finance institutions.
     
  24. Strathmore WOCCU African Management Institute (SWAMI) The course, implemented in Nairobi, Kenya, is designed for SACCO senior management staff and those aspiring to be managers, includes modules on financial management, marketing, information technology, PEARLS, governance, and the development of budget, business and marketing plans.
     
  25. The Credit Academy offers consumer credit and risk management seminars in Johannesburg , South Africa and at client sites.
     
  26. Tata Dhan Academy, Madurai offers an annual program: The ART (Advanced Reflective education and Training) of Upscaling Microfinance, designed for senior decision makers and practitioners from microfinance institutions, banks, donor organisations, government agencies, NGOs, development finance institutions and international organisations that recognise the potential and importance of scaling-up microfinance programmes and addressing poverty. 
     
  27. University of Pretoria Centre for Microfinance offers courses in microfinance at formal and non-formal levels, including Executive Management Courses in Microfinance (it also offers an MBA in Microfinance, a Master Class In Microfinance for students who already obtained an MBA degree, a Certificate in Microfinance and a Certificate in Microfinance Management)
