Training Programs and Institutions: Degree Programs
 

These institutions provide degree courses and diplomas in microfinance.  

  1. American University – School of International Service - International Development Program offers an MA in International Development for students who desire a broad, multidisciplinary approach to international development theories, issues, and programs, and an MS in Development Management for students with at least two years of field experience who wish to focus on management.
  2. Ataneo de Manila University School of Social Sciences - Development Studies Program has a variety of microfinance capacity building courses that include some product development courses with a focus on market research.
  3. Brandeis University – Heller School Program in Sustainable International Development (SID) offers a two-year M.A. degree with an option to concentrate in microfinance.
  4. CARD-MRI Development Institute (CMDI) , in partnership with the Southeast Asia Interdisciplinary Development Institute (SAIDI) School of Organization Development , offers a master’s program in Microfinance Management designed for mid-level microfinance managers to complete over 12-14 months while working full-time at a branch and leading to an accredited Master of Arts degree in Organization Development major in Microfinance Management.
  5. Coady International Institute - St. Francis Xavier University offers a 3-week Community-Based Microfinance Certificate (Distance Learning) aiming at strengthening community-based and member-based initiatives in microfinance through local leadership development. The course is designed for middle and senior microfinance practitioners with at least three years experience in microfinance. A few spaces are reserved for regulators, policy makers and donors.
  6. European Microfinance Program (EMP)  is an option of the two-year Masters program at the three participating universities. (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Paris Dauphine or Wageningen University ). The EMP courses are taught in English by professors from these European universities as well as by microfinance experts from PlaNet Finance. The program takes a multidisciplinary approach aimed at broadening the understanding of microfinance and its future challenges in developing countries.
  7. Fordham University – Graduate Program in International Political Economy and Development offers an M.A. and certificate programs covering advanced interdisciplinary study of global economic relations and international development issues with options for specialization in International Banking and Finance, International Development Studies, International & Development Economics, and International Political Analysis.
  8. George Washington University – Elliott School of International Affairs offers an M.A. in international development studies. Course work includes a multidisciplinary core and the opportunity to concentrate in fields such as International Development Management, Economic Development Policy, and Women and Development.
  9. Harvard University - Kennedy School of Government offers a master's degree in Master in Public Administration in International Development (MPA/ID), an economics-centered, multi-disciplinary program, combining training in analytical and quantitative methods with an emphasis on policy and practice.
  10. Harvard University - Kennedy School of Government offers its annual, two-week program on Financial Institutions for Private Enterprise Development (FIPED) for professionals working in the areas of micro enterprise finance and commercial banking for small- and medium-sized businesses. This program is designed to aid participants in the sustainable provision of financial services for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). FIPED presents participants with an opportunity to learn from the successful experiences of other countries. The course shows how to design appropriate financial instruments and to adopt market-oriented management approaches to serve the needs of MSMEs.
  11. Johns Hopkins University – Nitze School of Advanced International Studies The International Development (IDEV) Program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of developing countries, with the aim of preparing students for careers in development. Students can choose one of three tracks:  Finance and Development, Politics and Governance, and Social Change and Development.
  12. Microfinance Management Institute (MFMI) - International Fellowship Program in Microfinance Management provides one-year fellowships for activities that advance postgraduate teaching and research in microfinance management.
  13. Microfinance Management Institute (MFMI) - International Network of Partner Schools supports an international network of six graduate institutions in four countries to develop research-based teaching and training programs in microfinance management: (Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in the Philippines; INCAE in Costa Rica; Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) in India; Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) in India; Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) in India; and University of Pretoria in South Africa.
  14. Ohio State University – Rural Finance Program offers a M.S. and a Ph.D. in agricultural, environmental and development economics. The Development Economics specialization covers poverty alleviation, microfinance, spatial inequality, ex-urban development, food security, human capital formation, sustainable development, social capital, technology transfer, microenterprise development, and rural development policy.
  15. Southern New Hampshire University - Microenterprise Development Institute holds an annual Microenterprise Development Institute training program for microfinance professionals. The program is dedicated to building both financial and social capital, and to helping practitioners to find a balance between these two important aspects that will stimulate sustainable growth.
  16. The University of Reading, UK  offers a one-year MSc in Development Finance including a specialization in microenterprise finance. The core modules cover key issues within the field of development finance and microenterprise finance, against the background of major perspectives on development and macroeconomic policy.
  17. UCLA CIBER Microfinance Research Program seeks to share the knowledge and talents of MBA students with managers of microfinance institutions to broaden student awareness of the issues facing entrepreneurial development within emerging markets by conducting primary research in the field of microfinance and developing an effective plan for a local microfinance institution or project sponsor.
  18. Uganda Martyrs University - Department of Microfinance offers a Diploma/Degree programme of Microfinance and Community Economic Development through its faculty of Business Adminsitration and Management.
  19. University of Pretoria - Centre for Microfinance The Graduate School of Management offers a choice of domains in the final year of the MBA degree, including one in Microfinance. Certificate programs are also offered in Microfinance.
